How effective is a blog in promoting a business/product? If you have used one, do you write it yourself, or hire someone to do it for you?

Nope. I have my own blog and I run it myself. I think it's a great way to promote anything you do.
Remember, PR is good in all forms and fashions. With a blog, if you do something good, or big, you should want to share! Show it off and show your competitors your accomplishements.

Blogs are a very good way to promote a business because prices are generally cheaper and you can choose which blogs to advertise on.

Blogs are effective to the extent that they help in building your PR and also generate some traffic in certain cases.
I don't hire anyone to write, because i know whats to be written and the time it takes to find someone, explain them and then pay, isn't worth it. It takes me lesser time to write posts myself and saves some $ as well. Yeah few $ matter because my blogs have many posts or articles. Blogs are useful only if you update them regularly. If you post once in blue moon they are more of a liability if you already have a site and business to manage. :)

I have my own blog, hosted on my site, and I use WordPress as my software. It is very easy to do your own blog, and when I am in the mood, I write several entries and store them so I publish one a day. That way if I am busy, I always have a few entries to post and I have a reminder in Outlook that reminds me to post once a day.
All you need to do is a paragraph or two, and if you can link to another blog, then you have even less work to do.

Blogs are very profitable because for some reason they get indexed in the search engines VERY fast. Depending on your competition, you could see your website ranked number 1 in google in a matter of days. Thats just what I've noticed by using blogspot.com anyway.

Depending on your industry, blogs can also be a great way to network with colleagues and peers that can eventually lead you to opportunities.
In the geek-world, one of the main ways we all keep in contact with each other is through our blogs. So on top of PR, they can also be great networking tools.
